Review: Don Jon (2013)

Don Jon

Porn, porn, porn, and a Jersey Scarlett Johansson.

Imdb synopsis:

A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.

Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza

Duration: 90 minutes

Genre: Comedy

Watch if you like: Crazy, Stupid, Love, Silver Linings Playbook, Friends with Benefits and Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I was really looking forward to this movie, but I had expected a bit more. It was funny, yes. But it was also weird.

I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the best actors out there at this time, but the character he played… Damn, I can’t believe there are people like him out there. Don’t get me wrong, porn’s okay and all, but the way he lives his life and his crazy ideals are just, well, crazy. And what is that creature Scarlett Johansson is supposed to be? Is that a woman? Granted, she’s a nice-looking creature with a stunning body (don’t like her face all that much). But Barbara (in my head I pronounce it very Jersey-like) is one weird broad. You should see this movie to know what I’m saying here. If you don’t know what I mean..well, maybe you’re from Jersey too then.

Julianne Moore plays a good Esther, and she’s a beautiful woman, which I could be jealous of when I hit her age (a couple of years to go). A lot of scenes throughout this movie made me roll my eyes in frustration, but mostly I thought this movie was funny, and Don Jon’s “happy ending” made me kinda like this movie.

My rating: 7 out of 10

My favorite quote: ” I never actually touch my cock ’til I find the right clip” and “I look like a grandmother but do I have any grandchildren?”

My suggestion: Pretty fun to watch, especially because the actors play these ridiculous characters. Great for a movie night with your friends, or alone.

Review: The Butler (2013)

The Butler

Wow

Imdb synopsis

As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and other major events affect this man’s life, family, and American society.

Director: Lee Daniels

Cast: Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Lenny Kravitz, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Robin Williams, James Marsden, etc.

Duration: 132 minutes

Genre: Drama

Watch if you like: The Help, Julie & Julia, The Iron Lady, and Eat, Pray, Love

Truly a wonderful movie, with a great compilation of presidents, starting from Eisenhower to Obama. And the cast blew my mind. Forest Whitaker is an amazing actor and they couldn’t have picked a better Cecile Gaines. And Oprah Winfrey as his wife, what a great performance!

The movie’s not just about a butler and the white house. It’s mostly about his relationship with his son. They don’t see eye to eye , since his son fights for the Civil Rights Movement and his father doesn’t want him to. His wife Gloria (Oprah) is a bit of an alcoholic who loves to throw a good party. Cecile has great fellow butlers at the White House, Lenny Kravitz and Cuba Gooding Jr. and they become friends along the way.

The scene that impressed me most was the scene in the diner with Cecile’s son Louis and his gang (Black Panthers I believe they were called). The way the white people act around black people in the day is truly embarrassing. This movie is a great representation of the black/white reality and it’s simply a must-watch!

My rating: 8 out of 10

My favorite quotes: “We have no tolerance for politics here at the White House.” and “Everything you are and everything you have, is because of that butler.”

My suggestion: This is one hell of a movie that you cannot NOT SEE as a movie fanatic. Even when you’re not, leave the other crap movies behind and just watch this one.

Day 14: My favorite quote from any movie

I’m going to use several quotes for this challenge. And I’m gonna challenge you as well during this post.

Below are quite a few quotes, without the accompanying movie. It’s on you to guess the movie to the quote. Up for it? Let me know how much you got right!

The answers are all in a click.

1. “He’s blue-tiful.”

2. The more you think you see, the less you’ll actually notice.”

3. Privacy. Absolute myth. There’s no such thing.”

4. The house always wins, which is why we don’t have to cheat people.”

5. Johnny: “So, what do you think about dinner?”

Mickey: “You mean together?”

Johnny: “That’s a little forward, don’t you think? But, if you’re asking me out, then, yes, I accept.”

6. Boy these vodka Red Bulls are strange. I feel like I’m getting drunk and electrocuted at the same time! The music, it’s loud! It’s like everything sounds alike, like they’re playing the same song over and over and over again. I probably should get up and dance but I’m used to having a partner. It doesn’t seem to matter to that fella. Maybe I’ll give it a shot. Maybe not. I hope they play something different. Maybe now.”

7. He’s not a person anymore. No, he stopped being a person when he took our daughters.”

8. “Go to your closet and pray”

9. “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends.”

10. “I carried a watermelon”

11. “It’s so fluffy!”

12. “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.” ( My all-time favorite quote!)

Review: White House Down (2013)

White House Down

whitehousedown

Testosterone and funnies

Imdb synopsis:

While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman springs into action to save his child and protect the president from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.

Director: Roland Emmerich

Cast: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rachelle Lefevre, Joey King

Duration: 110 minutes

Genre: Action

Watch if you like: Cel 211, 2012, Collateral and Air Force One

I am almost ashamed to say it, but I loved this movie! So cliché, I know, but that didn’t stop me from laughing out loud and gasping in shock sometimes. Channing Tatum is great as ever, as a dad to a very brave (and stupid) little girl. He tries to be a better dad, and tries to get a job as a security guard at the White House. Right at that moment that he’s there with his daughter, an attack is being made on the White House. He finds himself guarding the president (Jamie Foxx) and searching for his daughter and this results in some action and comedic scenes. So glad I have seen this movie.

White House Down is probably not a good movie, but it sure is entertaining. The fact that I laughed out loud is enough for me to like this movie. The way to the next step ‘love’ has everything to do with Channing and Jamie. I loved it!

My rating: 7 out of 10

My favorite quote: “Can you not hit me in the head with a rocket when I’m trying to drive?” and “Get your hands off my Jordan’s!”

My suggestion: You might not agree with me after seeing it, but I do hope it will make you laugh. No brain cells needed, just some good old fun.
